About Luminary

Jadikan Lightning Project

Luminary started with a reaction to light painting images. Once I saw these pictures I knew they were special.  I thnk that there is something distinctly powerful in the light painting work artists are currently creating and exploring across the planet. I think about the artists themselves, to the people conjuring these light paintings.  I want to know what their internal voice sounds like.  I want to hear from the minds that made this magic.

As with any other artistic technique, for some it's a hobby and for some it's much more.  The artists in Luminary are a global representation of light painting masters. Location and environment play integral roles in compelling light painting.  So, they play an important role in Luminary.  Location and environment are the palette for these light painters while each light has  a unique "brush stroke".  The artist stands in a place then moves within the space leaving behind a phantasmagoric trail invisible to the naked eye during it's creation, but clearly perceived in the artists mind.  Light painting requires a precise spatial awareness and ability to visualize an image in 3 dimensions over time. This is why I like to refer to light painting as four dimensional art.

Cubist painter Albert Gleizes has been quoted as saying, "Beyond the three dimensions of Euclid we have added another, the fourth dimension, which is to say, the figuration of space, the measure of the infinite."  The measure of the infinite I like as a description.  It seems to me that all art is an effort to measure the infinity inside ourselves.  To "define" or "delineate" some tangible form from the infinity in our minds and bring it into the material world for inspection and wonder.  Light painting pictures show a very evocative way to measure the infinite possibilities our bodies have for motion, to measure the infinite ways we can conceptually reinvent our surroundings, and to manifest air as a pliable/visible medium to capture a passage through an infinite space.

Successful light painting is essentially an "interpretive performance".  The artist is moving through time and space capturing a specific series of actions that engage technical as well as creative processes.  It's a truly unrepeatable sequence of movements that manifest an image document of actions singular to those brief moments of creation. It marks our creative essence in every picture.  Light painting marks our ability for creative action that contains within it an intangible, a concept.  It marks the fact that we can conceive of and immediately act on concepts innately unquantifiable, but physically, technically, and artistically expressible in a way that has the viewer sharing in an emotion or understanding through an interaction with the abstract.

When the viewer imagines what they think the process is to make these pictures they are imagining and "seeing" the performance of the artist in their minds eye.  This happens while also experiencing a directly visceral response to the image, and the combination of imagining the process and feeling an emotional reaction creates a synergistic experience for the viewer.  They are sharing in the performance that happened over time, seeing it, feeling it, watching it from a single still picture.

Luminary is inside the art, inside the minds, outside of time.  Luminary is an active experience as a movie.  It will take you into the light and give you a space to inhabit within each artists' environment.   Luminary is a trip across the world, but more importantly a trip inside the creative minds behind one of the most engaging and compelling digital arts experiences of our time.
